Within the Buzzards Community sailing lessons for children are given by the Buzzards Sailing School, a separate but affiliated organization.

Buzzards Sailing School

The Buzzards Sailing School, Inc. (BSS) is a non-profit, community sailing school for youth ages 8 to 18 located on Wings Neck in Pocasset, Massachusetts. The summer of 2022 will be our 57th year.

Classes are held for every level from beginner sailors to experienced racers. A Friday morning race series, sponsored by the Buzzards YC, provides new and returning racers an opportunity to compete against their peers. Other racing and regatta options are available depending on interest and experience.

All classes are taught by experienced instructors in school-owned Widgeons and 420s, and a combination of school-owned and privately-owned International Optimist "Opti" dinghies. We offer a combination of land- and water-based instruction.

Our mission is to inspire young people and teach them to master the art of sailing through hands-on learning. By learning and doing, we believe young sailors will develop a lifelong love of sailing. The goal of the program is to provide students a fun and safe summer experience built around sailing and racing, with a focus on teamwork, water safety, and seamanship skills.

All donations made to the Sailing School are tax deductible and are greatly appreciated. The school depends on donations to keep the cost of tuition at an affordable level, to cover the costs of scholarships, and to ensure our fleet of sail and power boats is well maintained.
